WE KEEP SPOTTIN' DOTS
Sunshade Contest Rolls Along; Pick Up Your Prize at the Link Office
And the winning continues, as residents show off their Link sunshades throughout the community. If you’re the owner of this Kia spotted along Fitzroy Drive, or this Acura we saw at Desert Vista, both in early June, head to the Link office at Mountain Shadows because you are WINNERS! See you soon.
TIME TO PAUSE FOR YOUR DOG'S PAWS
It’s hot and getting hotter. And that means if the concrete is too hot for you to walk bare-footed on, then it is certainly too hot for your dog’s paws. As the summer approaches it is recommended to change up your walking routine to include morning hours. If you usually walk your dog in the afternoon, remember that the sidewalk holds in the heat it’s captured throughout the day, so moving to a greenbelt might be a good idea. And if you walk on a community greenbelt, please be sure to pick up any pet waste. Be a good neighbor and, most importantly, don’t give your dog a bad rap.
PALM TREE TRIMMING CONTINUES THIS WEEK
SCSCAI’s Landscape Department will start trimming fan palms throughout Sun City on Monday, June 24. Most of the palms are located around Del Webb Boulevard, Palm Valley Golf Course and Mountain Shadows Community Center. According to Louis Darling, Sun City’s Director of Landscape, trimming usually takes about a week to complete, unless the weather interferes (wind or thunder storms). During the project, please be mindful of traffic control. If orange cones are out, drivers must slow down around the work crews; if you’re walking around marked areas please be careful to watch for falling fronds.

Some of you will remember back to the “Our Gang” movies of the 1930s when Alfalfa and friends would think of ways to earn money — one of which was to “put on a show. It’s easy!” Well, it was Hollywood easy, not real-life easy.
When the Community Theater Club got together to plan its next big thing, one thing was certain: Members wanted to do a Broadway musical. Less certain was which of the hundreds of available candidates should they do. Enter director Audra Duvall.
“When the committee approached me to direct their play, they left it to me to suggest a title. After some thought, I suggested “Grease” — a suggestion that was enthusiastically welcomed. I had previously directed a rendition of “Grease” at Forest Grove high school in Oregon and it was a smashing success.
“Your first thought may be that getting a bunch of 14- and 15-year-olds to pretend to be 17- and 18-year-old high school seniors got to be a lot easier than getting senior citizens to do it. But, I beg to differ — the kids could only image what they would be like in three or so years, while the seniors citizens have been there, done that. Much easier to go into memory and remember what the senior year was like than to imagine it,” Audra said.
Educator by day, director by night, Dr. Duvall has been involved with local theater groups since her teen years. She acted in school plays while in middle and high school and received an award as the Best Student Director at her high school before going on to major in theater at college.
“As a theater major, we acted, directed and produced plays. It was just part of the course. Later, I directed plays at the local community college, again receiving an award, and was an Education Professor at the University of Phoenix for 10 years during which time she also taught drama, speech and communications. But perhaps the most important preparation for a directing role was my doctoral thesis on motivation and student voice. Simply put, how to listen to your students (or actors) and motivate them to do their best.”
So it begins………
On May 25, members of the Community Theater Club and the Sun City Dance Company met for their first rehearsal. But this was just the beginning. Before the curtain comes up on the first of three performances scheduled for Friday, September 13 through Sunday, September 15, this group of 18 actors and numerous backstage personnel will have met 40 times and, collectively, put it more than 2,100 performer hours. All so that, to the audience, it looks easy.
