EASY EATS WITH TAMMY COLLINS
THANK YOU
I wish to thank those of you who have read this column throughout the years. I have so enjoyed relating my dining out experiences. But it is time for me to say good-bye to “Easy Eats.”

Tavern at the Falls has several items that are on my “Best List.” Four I would like to mention are the French fries, the chop house burger, potato salad, and the deli wrap with crispy chicken. The Summit’s bar food is always a winner and the Sunday Buffet, complete with fantastic view and live music, is truly a must.
A wonderful benefit for Sun City Summerlin card carrying members is our Restaurant Loyalty Club. This benefit is replacing the previous dollars off for residents. Sign-up is easy, just ask your server at either Tavern at the Falls or The Summit to sign you up. Benefits begin after you enroll.
Now for my second Foodie Hint: Note the dates for the 2023 Three Square Restaurant Week. The dates this year are June 6 through June 16. During this time, local restaurants offer bargain prices on select items. Beginning a month prior, the list of participating eateries begins posting online, along with the menus and prices. These eleven days afford diners an opportunity to experience some of Las Vegas’s finest dining at once a year prices. Last year, our wonderful “Link” advertiser, Ohlala French Bistro participated. Can tell you, we were thrilled with our Restaurant Week Meal there.
Again, thank you to all who have read this column. Bon Appetit
SNOOZE IS NO SLEEPER
Recently made a visit to Snooze, the new breakfast place in Rampart Commons (northwest corner of Rampart and Charleston) next to North Italia. It’s a fun place. If you were not awake prior to entering, you will be as soon as you notice the bright décor.
We were greeted with an opened door and staff that was all smiles. Hard to be early-morning grumpy when we were so welcomed. We were seated immediately, greeted by our waitperson, and offered drinks. The menu seems to cover all the breakfast bases—benedicts, omelets, pancakes, waffles, burritos—you get the idea. In addition, alcoholic breakfast drinks are offered. So, if you need a Bloody Mary or mimosa to start your day, Snooze can accommodate.
There were three of us, and we all ordered different items. Our guest ordered ala carte—scrambled eggs, a pancake, and English muffin. My better half had a traditional breakfast of sausage, eggs, toast, and hashbrowns, while I had the Bella, Bella Benny. We all were pleased with our choices.
The service was attentive, but again not “in your face.” But i must say the noise level was high, often making it difficult to hear one another. So, if you want good food, great service, and pleasant surroundings at what are going prices for our area of Las Vegas, I would recommend Snooze. However, it is not a place for a serious, intimate conversation.
To view the menu with prices listed, Google “Snooze, Las Vegas.” Note, Snooze does not take reservations, but one can log on to a “wait list.” Also, the restaurant has a policy that all in a party must be present to be seated.
If you have a busy morning planned and need a good lively start, Snooze is the place to begin.

WHEN ONLY A BURRITO WILL DO
GO TO BUENA VISTA KITCHEN
Ever wake up and only a burrito will do for breakfast? Well, that happened on a recent Saturday. Was aware of Buena Vista Kitchen in Desert Shores on Restaurant Row that featured breakfast burritos. So gave it a try. Was not disappointed.
Buena Vista Kitchen occupies a portion of the space that was previously Rooster Boy Café. There is also a breakfast/pastry shop in the remaining space. So, there is no excuse to skip breakfast when in the area. Seating is outside, but heaters were operating on the cool day I visited, and it was quite comfortable as I waited there for our carryout order. It is a very pleasant space for dining.
I ordered the Italian and my husband the Sunday Morning. The burritos are enough to share, they are really big. My Italian was loaded with eggs, cheese, and spicy sausage. The Sunday Morning features eggs, cheese and ham. Buena Vista Kitchen also features smoothies. On a warmer day, want to give one a try.
Buena Vista Kitchen offers several breakfast options, as well, as tempting lunch items. The website: buenavistakitchen.com lists the full menu that includes crepes, omelets, skillets for breakfast. For lunch, there are tacos and bowls among other items. Also, prices are listed when one clicks on the full menu.
The service was welcoming and gracious. On a warmer day, I plan to dine in. My carry-out order was nicely presented.
It is nice to have such a wonderful eatery so near our Sun City Summerlin.

LET'S GO!
TO CHINA A GO GO
Just had to check out the new Chinese place in Village Trails Center—China A Go Go. I had noticed the signage a while back. Such an eatery would be a welcome addition and so nearby. The location is between McDonald’s and Starbucks.
Never, and I mean never, have I seen a busier place. I was there during the noon mealtime when the phone was ringing constantly, and people were lined up to place orders. The place has a somewhat open kitchen and everyone was working at a fast pace.
In my opinion, this is not a place for dining-in. There are a few booths and tables, but most were occupied by those, like myself, waiting for carryout orders. Also the atmosphere is frantic, and décor, if any, is bare bones.
Now for the food. It is reasonably priced, and servings are generous. I had sweet and sour pork while my husband ordered chicken fried rice. His fried rice had lots of chicken and my pork dish did not skimp on the meat. Would we go there again, you bet.
While waiting for my food to be prepared, I spoke with several patrons. Many were repeat customers who shared their delight with the new neighborhood addition.
The menu is vast---seeming to cover just about all Chinese options. Didn’t see Peking Duck, but hey, that takes time, and China A Go Go is all about preparing and distributing food as quickly as possible. As mentioned before, the prices seem in line with other restaurants in the area.
In addition to Chinese food, China A Go Go has a menu of smoothies in a rainbow of colors. Those smoothies were truly a popular item the day I visited. Again, many seemed to be going to repeat customers.
The Summerlin location is just one of several for China A Go Go in the valley. For complete information go to: www.orderchinaagogovillagecenter.com.

PAYMON'S MEDITERRANEAN CAFE
OK, I know Paymon’s is not a new eatery, but just never made it there until recently. Passed it so many times on West Sahara. A listing of the best burgers in Las Vegas on an OpenTable website finally made it a destination. Paymon’s lamb burger was on the list.
I am a lamb lover and note those restaurants that offer it. Trying the lamb burger was a no brainer.
We went on a Saturday, mid-afternoon. The greeting by the hostess was more than welcoming. We were immediately seated--our waitperson was at our table in an instant.
I ordered the lamb burger and my husband opted for a meatball sandwich. We decided to try and share an order of Athens Fries. Gotta tell you, the Athens Fries were amazing with Mediterranean seasoning and a tasty dipping sauce.
My lamb burger lived up to the hype and my better half said his meatball sandwich was quite good. Both servings were more than ample.
The decor is over the top Middle Eastern, but at Paymon’s it works. We did not explore the lounge nor the patio seating, but at a glance both appeared attractive.
We were both amazed at the number of diners at Paymon’s in the middle of a Saturday afternoon. Not every table was full, but a very steady crowd dining in with several carry-outs. What took us so long to finally visit this place?
Prices are in line with other Las Vegas eateries. And vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free offerings are clearly marked on the menu. Check out Paymon’s at: paymons.com.
And be sure to try the Athens Fries.

CHINGLISH CANTONESE WINE BAR
Must share a Restaurant Week find. Chinglish Cantonese Wine Bar located in Boca Park is it. We liked the lunch menu as posted on-line for Restaurant Week, so decided to give the eatery a try.
We were delighted with all aspects of our meal—greeting at the door, prompt and efficient service and great food. The décor was pleasing, Chinese—a bit up-scale from the plethora of red lanterns often found in such establishments. When you go, note the depiction of the Last Supper.
We noted a full bar. There is a pleasant outdoor seating area. However, for lunch on one of our very hot Las Vegas days, all were choosing to dine indoors
We both had the Poh Poh’s dumplings for starters. Delicious and truly an ample serving for each of us. For our entrée we chose sweet and sour chicken. The sauce, containing blueberries, was especially tasty. For dessert, the offering was Chinglish’s cronuts (think croissant donut holes served with chocolate and caramel sauce)
This year some participating restaurants extended their Restaurant Week bargains another seven days. Chinglish was one eatery that decided to extend. We went again, only this time for dinner.
Again. we had the dumplings, but chose different entrees. My husband selected the Portuguese Fried Rice, while I had Hong Kong Crispy Noodles. Once again, we were not disappointed. And both of us chose the Chocolate dessert served with vanilla ice cream--the Decadent Chocolate Cake. The chocolate component seemed to a flourless chocolate cake that was truly amazing.
Chinglish offers vegan options as well as gluten free choices. And for those of us who avoid alcohol, there is a “Mocktail” menu. Finally, for those who keep kosher, there is a completely separate section with separate menu. Clearly this establishment seems to cover most dining-out options and needs.
The websites with location, contact information, menu and prices for both Chinglish Cantonese Wine Bar and Kosher Chinglish are posted on-line at: www.chinglishwinebar.com and www.kosherchinglish.com.
Giving a dollar rating to Chinglish would not reflect the true cost of the foods we experienced. These were Restaurant Week prices. So. I would suggest that if you plan to visit either Chinglish or Kosher Chinglish, you first view the prices on-line. For us, the regular prices make it special occasion experience.

BURGERS AND BEER! COMING RIGHT UP AT SLATER'S 50/50
If burgers and beer are your things, have I got a recommendation for you—Slater’s 50/50. The restaurant is located at 7511 Lake Mead Boulevard in the space recently vacated by Osaka, just east of Zupas. This eatery touts the three B’s--burgers, beer and bacon.
The vibe is set early on with the artwork as one enters. Fun renderings of Elvis and Las Vegas scenes. The interior is spare and designed for serious burger eating and beer drinking. I liked that.
We were greeted by the hostess with a friendly smile and immediately seated in the main area. There are several semi-private areas that seemed great for groups. We were there in the middle of the afternoon, so missed the lunch crowd. However, there were still patrons seated about the place with more arriving steadily.
Our waitress was truly amazing. Perfect service. At the ready with drinks and ready to explain the menu. My husband ordered a turkey burger and I, an interesting Cobb salad. His burger came with bacon catsup for the really great fries. He pronounced the bacon catsup “good.” That’s about superlative he gets. Another fry choice is sweet-potato fries with pumpkin dip. My salad was more than ample and quite delicious.
But the most tempting thing on the menu was a strawberry cheesecake milkshake. A glance at the on-line menu has photos of over the top shake offerings. Got the strawberry cheesecake shake that came with a piece of cheesecake and big strawberry on top. Outstanding! I did ask our waitress if she could deconstruct the shake before serving. She boxed up the topping and brought only the shake. Told you, great service.
The 50/50 in Slater’s name denotes the fact that burgers are 50 percent ground beef and 50 percent ground bacon. Check out the menu for some truly “interesting” burgers. The website is: slaters5050lasvegas.com. The restaurant is open from 11 A.M. to 10 P.M. daily. There is another Slater’s 50/50 location at Silverado Ranch.
Now for the beer, there are many craft beers on tap. The website lists those beers presently being served at both Lake Mead and Silverado Ranch with descriptions and prices. The website also includes prices for all food items.
Next time I am forgetting a salad and trying one of the burgers. Can’t wait.

FOLLOW YOUR HEART TO LOLA...CAFE LOLA
Intrigued by the promise of Afternoon Tea, we decided to check out the Summerlin location for Café Lola. It is south on Hualapai just outside the beltway. The café offers breakfast, sandwiches, and lattes of varying flavors and colors. Also offered are tea with the usual tiered selection of pastries.
It was Sunday afternoon and the place was really busy. We were lucky to find an indoor table. We also noted that the place was closing earlier that day at 3 p.m. instead of the usual 5 p.m. It seems Café Lola hosts many special events—think our own Summit. If you plan a visit, I would suggest calling ahead to be certain you do not make the trip in vain. As I write this, it is just before Easter and a special event included a visit from the Easter Bunny. This event required reservations.
Think pink. It is truly a girlie girl vibe. However, the menu for breakfast and lunch seemed to be satisfying several males—among them my husband. He ordered a breakfast (which is served all day) of veggie scramble that came with toast and berries. He added avocado and bacon. He was pleased with his selection. I opted for lunch—the spicy chicken Caesar “sammy.” It was truly delicious.
Café Lola specializes in lattes , though it offers wine, wine and champagne cocktails, and a variety of teas. It markets itself as a place for little girls to be stars. We noticed a table of mothers and daughters nearby who were having a delightful time. The daughters were choosing various drinks that sported all sorts of add-ons crammed into the whipped cream toppings. The mothers were enjoying less decorative fare. Truly a place to take a young lady who would love to dress-up and have a “real tea party.”
One minus (if one wanted the Afternoon Tea experience) was the ordering process. It is a line up, order, pay and take a number to the table. The food is then delivered. However, waitstaff did check often to determine if additional items and service was wanted.
Prices at Café Lola are in line with others in our area, with the exception of some of the special lattes, which seem a bit pricy. If in the area at breakfast or lunch time, we would certainly return. As for Afternoon Tea, I would probably not choose Café Lola. Guess I like “being served.” However, if I wished to delight a young female guest, Café Lola would be my choice.
The website offers the menu with prices. Love when an establishment lists prices up front. The website is: ilovecafelola.com.

BIBS ON FOR CRAB N SPICE
A Friday during Lent was excuse enough for us to try Crab N Spice located in the Summerhill Plaza off Lake Mead. Tucked away behind Slaters 50/50, which took over the Osaka location, Crab N Spice is not easy to find. However, judging by the number of diners when we were there for lunch, many have found it.
We were greeted by a very friendly fellow and immediately shown a table and our drink order taken. The décor was pleasant and nautical. As we looked at the menu, we opted for fried everything—calamari (which was tender and not at all tough and rubbery as overcooked calamari tends to be), crab fries (French fried potatoes covered with crab and a very good sauce), and fried string beans (which were a very tasty surprise). We chose two dipping sauces, and both were delicious.
The service was flawless, with drink refills offered frequently. The menu indicated that beer and wine would be “Coming Soon.”
We noticed many enjoying whole crab and shrimp. All were properly “bibbed” using fingers to get crab and shrimp meat. Loved that each table had a napkin dispenser. One needs lots of napkins at Crab N Spice. Another popular item seemed to be clam chowder.
Website address for Crab N Spice is: www.crabnspice.com. There are various locations. We visited the Summerlin site. Prices are listed on the website, but per pound prices are probably most up-to-date on the chalk board inside the restaurant.
This is not a fancy place, but one that has a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

ARCHI'S THAI CAFE IS A GOOD THING IN SO MANY WAYS
A good friend recently mentioned that her husband eats vegan two meals a day while she likes to explore the full menu. Archi’s Thai Café at Village Square is a place they both enjoy. They are both on to a good thing.
Archi’s is in the line of eateries at Village Square (northwest corner of Fort Apache and Sahara). We went for the lunch special that includes soup, a fried wonton, an egg roll, a small salad, and entrée. Depending on the choice of entrée protein or vegetables, prices range from $11.95 to $13.95 at the time of this writing.
It was noon when we visited, and the place was busy with diners eating in and carrying out. The décor is pleasant and not over-powering. The service was prompt. And servers were pleasant, but again not “in one’s face.” One of the tests for good service in MHO is having water glasses refilled without asking, as they were at Archi’s.
My husband and I both ordered the lunch special. He ordered pepper steak and I pad thai with chicken. We were both pleased with our orders and the generous amounts of beef and chicken we were served. Would we go to Archi’s again? You bet.
Archi’s website, complete with menu and prices, as well as location address, hours of operation, and phone number is: archisthailv.com. We visited the Sahara location.
Recently I was asked by two different people and two different times if I received any compensation from the Link coffers for this column. The answer is no. I have done this for years on my own dime. Further I do not identify myself as someone who might write a review for our Sun City magazine before, during, or after the meal. And I accept no offers for complementary food after I review an eatery. In addition, I write only positive reviews. Believe me, my husband and I have had some really bad meals that you will never see mentioned in this column. Why do I do it? I love eating out and trying new places.

PATISSERIE MANON, WHAT A FIND!
Gotta love when a friend recommends an eatery. A Sun City friend told us how much she loved Patisserie Manon located in the row of shops behind Bonefish Grill on Charleston Boulevard. What a find. I know, it has been there for quite some time, but finally visited and so glad we did.
The place was really busy when we visited at the end of a Saturday lunch time. The shop is divided into two sections—the first is for the quick sale of pastries while the back is the Bistro which offers both sweet and savory fare made to order. Customers order and pay at a cashier station, are given a number that is placed on the table, and the order is delivered to the table.
There are tables in the pastry part of the store to accommodate the overflow from the Bistro section. We found one of the last tables in the Bistro just across from the open kitchen, where the food was being prepared. Here we noticed ever so many customers picking up carry-out orders.
We both ordered Croque Madam which translates as a toasted ham and cheese sandwich with a fried egg on top. With the sandwich was a small very crisp and fresh green salad with shredded carrots and, of course, French dressing. Truly delicious. Service was pleasant. The décor bright and cheerful. Will we return? You bet! The prices are truly reasonable, as our entrees were $9.95 each at the time of this writing.
To exit, we had to pass the display cases offering pastries. Defy anyone to make it out the door without a box with a pastry or two in it. Well, we sure didn’t. I chose Raspberry Mouse cake—a chocolate and raspberry creation that was truly wonderful. My better half chose a Mocha flavored cake creation. He said it was delicious.
Bistro and pastry prices posted on the website are a bit less than in the pamphlet I picked up at the pastry cashier’s station. For example: The web price for our Croque Madams is $9.75, while the up-dated menu, is $9.95. Hey, everything now costs a bit more.
The hours on the website, patisseriemanon.com, differ a bit from the brochure I picked up at the pastry cashier’s station. But both agree that every day shop is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The difference is the days the establishment is open until 8 p.m. If you plan to go after 7 p.m., I suggest you call (702) 586-2666 to be sure you are not disappointed.
As previously stated, Patisserie Manon is located behind Bonefish Grill at 8751 West Charleston Boulevard. In reading about the place, I find it has been there for several years. Boy, did I miss that one! So now I know.
Patisserie Manon has a wine and beer license. Sometimes a glass of wine helps to complete a French meal.

THE SUMMIT SUNDAY BRUNCH?
YOU'LL BE HOOKED!
OK, I confess we are hooked on The Summit Sunday Brunch as, it seems, are many others who are regulars. Three recent Sundays in a row at least one person said, “Why don’t you review the Summit Sunday Brunch?” I guess I just assumed everyone just knew about it. Wrong. Two of the three were first timers—one who has lived here for a while and a couple who were new residents. The other was fellow online “Link” columnist, Stu Gershon. So, this review is for those who have never been to the Summit Sunday Brunch.
The attractions of this weekly event are many—delicious food, great service, a killer view, live piano music by Rod Ouano (who takes requests, by the way), screens up and silently running to watch pro-football, and the huge plus of seeing and visiting with so many Sun City Summerlin friends and neighbors.
Each week the offerings are a fresh fruit combo, green salad, the usual (eggs, bacon sausage, potatoes) and two hot protein dishes. Two recent Sundays these hot dishes included shrimp scampi, pot roast, breaded fish fillet, and bar-b-que brisket. Breakfast drinks of orange juice, coffee, tea, and on a recent Sunday, pink lemonade, are included in the brunch price. Also, good prices on mimosas and Bloody Marys. For many, the brunch highlight is the omelet station where omelets are made to order.
And what is brunch with out an array of sweets? The dessert table offers too many choices with cakes, cupcakes, cookies, puddings and other treats. The price is more than right. At present $13.95.
Don’t see anything you like or want on the brunch tables, for me an impossibility, you can always order anything on The Summit’s regular menu. Offerings from the regular menu are also reasonably priced.
So, if you have never been to The Summit Sunday Brunch, give a try. If you have guests, the view will always elicit a “Wow.” Recent guests included four of the best-behaved children ever.
A reminder that both The Summit and Tavern at the Falls are ours. Yes, we Sun City Summerlin homeowners are restaurateurs. The more successful our restaurants are the less they must be subsidized by our dues. Hey, I’d rather “eat my dues.”
See you at The Summit for Sunday Brunch.

HAWAIIAN FOOD ON THE "NINTH ISLAND"
IS AT KONOS NORTHSHORE
Those of us who live on the “The Ninth Island” (Hawaiian for Las Vegas) can save the cost of airfare when we have an itch for Hawaiian food. Konos Northshore located on the southeast corner of Buffalo and Washington is (for us) truly a find. The location, that was vacated by Cinnamons, is the first Konos location on the Mainland. There are several locations in Hawaii.
The house specialty is slow roasted pulled pork. And it is truly delicious as I tried the pork sliders. My better half opted for the Beach sandwich as he chose breakfast. Konos offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But the truly outstanding offerings, IMHO, are the shakes. Don’t let the sticker shock fool you, have you priced desserts in restaurants recently? I ordered the strawberry cheesecake shake, and it has been ages since I had something so tasty. Worth every penny. Husband ordered a mud pie shake and said it was very good. We asked for iced coffee, but Konos does not have decaf.
Konos is very informal, so if you are looking for a “dining experience” it is not the place for you. Order and pay before you are seated. Think a picnic atmosphere with fantastic food served in takeout containers with plastic service ware and the most friendly employees ever, then this is your place. BTW, the takeout containers came in handy as we both were unable to finish our meals and had the take-out containers already.
Now for the really fun part, on your first visit enter your telephone number on the keypad next to the cash register. On subsequent visits enter it again for a “spin the wheel” and see what prize you might have won. Guess Konos knew we in Las Vegas love spinning things that offer rewards.
Serving sizes and prices are in line with comparable eateries in the area. Once again, love the fact that Konos posts the menu on-line—along with prices. The website is: www.konosnorthshore.com.

YAY FOR BEIGNETS AT BENYEH
OK, I know beignets have no nutritional value, but they are sooo good. Of course, nothing beats the beignets at Café du Monde in New Orleans—where one can get “white lung” just from the powdered sugar floating in the air. But when I heard of Benyeh opening in Downtown Summerlin, I just had to give it a try. It took a while, but finally made it.
If you are not familiar with beignets, think of a square donut holes covered with powered sugar. Benyeh’s version of these small gems are tasty. In addition, there are other sweet offerings at Benyeh. All looked to be sinfully delicious. There are also specialty coffees. We opted to take our purchase home, but noticed customers at an outdoor table enjoying both the sweets and coffee. They were accompanied by four of the most adorable canines. Hey, I’m a “dog person.”
The interior was gleaming white with attractive benches on which to wait for your order. The gentleman manning the counter was more than helpful—even slipped us a couple of extra beignets. We also purchased some little pastry puffs covered with rock sugar. They, too, were delicious.
.Benyeh is located near Festival Plaza in Downtown Summerlin, just across the street from MTO. The address is: 1980 Festival Plaza Drive, Suite 160. The telephone number is: (725) 205-3105. It is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day of the week. The website is: benyehlv.com.
So, if you need a bit of sugar and caffeine as you feel your energy fading while shopping at Downtown Summerlin, stop in Benyeh for a bit of energy.

CLASSIC AND MODERN ITALIAN DISHES SERVED AT AROMI
After many great reviews, just had to check out Aromi, the Italian restaurant that now occupies the space vacated by Nittaya’s Secret Kitchen in the commercial area that contains Shepherd Eye Center on the southeast corner of Rampart and Lake Mead. For us, Aromi truly lived up to the hype. This new neighborhood jewel is not to be missed. That is if you enjoy good Italian food. And we sure do.
Listed on the restaurant’s website is a three-course lunch for $18. What a deal! We had to give it a try and both ordered Caesar salad, chicken Parmigiana served with a side of spaghetti, and tiramisu for dessert. The servings were generous. All three courses were really, really delicious. In addition to this lunch special, our server said the items on the dinner menu (which looked truly tempting) are also available at lunchtime.
The décor is my kind of place—simple and clean, with food being the main event. As the place is new and just feeling its way, there was one server taking care of all the front of the house chores—seating, taking orders, and serving. We were amazed at how efficient and attentive he was to every table. Could that guy ever multi-task.
For us, dinner would be a special occasion restaurant, but the $18 lunch special is truly a great deal. Check out the menu at the restaurant’s website: aromilv.com. Again, love that the website lists menu prices.
Aromi is also a wine bar. At lunch we didn’t indulge, but think wine with some of their small plates on the menu would make for a great Happy Hour.
Highly recommend you give Aromi a try. Great food, and so nearby.

AT HOME IN PIEROGI VILLAGE RESTAURANT
Urged by a rave review from a reader of her experience at nearby Pierogi Village, we just had to try it. The reader was “right on.” We enjoyed our meal there. And it is too near our Sun City Summerlin to ignore.
We decided on a very early dinner and were surprised to find others dining at that time. The friendliness vibe was apparent as we entered Pierogi Village. It is like stepping into someone’s home—so comfortable and relaxed. The décor reminds one of an intimate dining room in a home. As it was our first time, we did not follow the sign that stated “Order here. Pay here". We headed for a vacant table and the hostess was kind enough to bring menus to the table. Next time we will know.
We ordered the ten-piece sampler as we were pierogi virgins. What is a pierogi? The best way to describe it is a Polish pot sticker or a Polish ravioli. We had a choice of several fillings, and soon had our favorites. My better half liked the meat filling, while I liked the spinach and cheese. We both liked the sweet choices—like little pies—filled with apple and strawberry. The little pies were a nice ending to our pierogi feast.
For complete information about Pierogi Village (located next to Savers in the South Shores commercial area off Lake Mead Boulevard) is to Google “Pirogi Village, Las Vegas.” Clicking on the website brings up the menu complete with prices. I really love when an eatery lists prices. The prices at Pierogi Village are reasonable.
As we left, just a little after 4 p.m., we noticed every table was occupied. Truly a popular place. We are now wondering what took us so long to visit.

RESTAURANT WEEK BEGINS JUNE 7TH
This is a Foodie Alert. Three Square Food Bank’s annual Restaurant Week begins Monday, June 7, and continues through Friday, June 18. Last year’s event was cancelled due to that nasty virus. But this year it is returning.
If you are not familiar with this annual event, it is a win-win-win for the food bank, participating restaurants, and—most of all—we Valley diners. The food bank will receive $1 for each meal purchased from the Restaurant Week menu. The restaurants get to offer three (and often four) course menus that are truly bargains to diners who might not consider paying regular prices. And we, as diners, have an opportunity to sample some truly great food.
The website for Restaurant Week 2021 is: RestaurantWeekLV.org. You can select eateries by location, price, or cuisine type. When visiting a participating restaurant, be sure to ask for the Restaurant Week menu. Sometimes hosts and servers forget to offer it.
Want to give a nod to our faithful “Link” Dining Deals advertiser, Oh la la French Bistro. Oh la la is a participating restaurant and is offering both lunch and dinner menus. Love this classy little gem, great food, and so near-by. If you haven’t been, give Oh la la a try during Restaurant Week.
Hey, one can always begin a diet after Restaurant Week.

BREAKFAST AT MONTANA MEAT COMPANY?
YES PLEASE!
A reader suggested I try Montana Meat Company. She and her significant other had eaten there many times, had many different entrees, and loved the service. Hey, that’s all I needed to give it a try. So, recently four of us went there for breakfast. There are two Montana Meat Company locations in Las Vegas—one off Centennial Parkway and one on South Durango. For us, the nearer was the Centennial location.
Via the 215, Montana Meat Company is truly only minutes away—among the northern car dealerships off Centennial Center Boulevard. Its entrance is just across from a Honey Baked Ham Store. Also, nearby, a Walmart. The exterior was neat and attractive. This business is a 24/7 eating and gaming establishment. The dining room is separate from the bar area and a bit dark in the middle of the day. But the dark was quickly forgotten once we were stated in a (oh, so comfortable) booth. Don’t recall such comfortable seating. Immediately our drink order was taken as we waited for our fellow diners. Can’t say enough about the fantastic service. One of our party has very strict dietary requirements, and all her requests were honored.
Must mention the “breakfast potatoes.” We asked if they were spiced. Our waitperson said yes. But added they could be prepared plain. Well, my spouse and I had the spiced potatoes, and, a word of caution, they are spicy. We liked them, but many might find them a bit much. Our fellow diner requested plain breakfast potatoes and was pleased with her roasted spuds. Other breakfast items were prepared as requested and our coffee cups never got below half full.
Though the breakfast menu seemed to cover all the bases, it is the lunch and dinner menus that are amazing. My eyes were drawn to the lamb chop appetizer and the very large lamb chop entrée. The prices for these treats seem to be very reasonable. Hey, if lamb is not your thing, Montana Meat Company seems to offer a truly wide choice of entrees. So, check out the menu and prices at the website: montanameatco.com. And thanks to the reader who sent in the tip. Not so far from Sun City Summerlin, this place is a real find.

ROLL OVER TO BOSTON'S FISH HOUSE & BAR
If you don’t like fish or seafood, read no further. However, if you do, this is an April 2021 alert: The Summit’s April Special—a salmon Caesar salad is a winner. It makes a great lunch or light dinner. And now that The Summit is open until 6 p.m., an early dinner while watching the sun set over the valley can’t be beat.
One of the many new eateries at Tivoli Village is Boston’s Fish House & Bar. It is located just west of Café Leone, which now seems to be the café that ate Tivoli Village. Looked at the menu online and saw lobster roll. Had to try it.
Boston’s Fish House & Bar is truly a classy place. The décor is not over done—it is “just right.” The bar area is truly appealing. While there recently for lunch, we noticed several diners opted to eat at the bar. The interior is spacious, and seating is safely distanced. There is also a patio, which at lunch time was a bit too sunny for us. However, if you are a worshiper of old Sol, go for it.
We promptly were seated, and our drink order appeared almost immediately. Again, the service was attentive, but not hovering. Of course, I ordered a lobster roll which came with a side. I chose a salad. The salad was crisp and nicely dressed. I was amazed at the amount of lobster in the lobster roll. It was delicious. My better half, who never met a crab cake he didn’t like, ordered a crab cake sandwich. His side was steak fries. He declared the sandwich a winner.
Keeping in mind that we are in the desert, the menu prices for fresh seafood make Boston’s Fish House & Bar a special occasion place for us. But you can bet that I am now searching for a special occasion so we can return sooner rather than later. Also, it is a place we would love to “show off” to out of town visitors.
Love that the website for Boston Fish House & Bar lists prices. So there should be no sticker shock. The website address is: bostonsfishhouseandbar.com. The website contains hours of operation, location and contact information. Love that it is open for lunch when a bowl of clam chowder is just the thing.

SMALL GEM FOUND AT ROOSTER BOY CAFE
Finally made it to Rooster Boy Café. This small gem is located in the Desert Shores Lakeside complex. Tucked away between a small Mexican eatery and the better-known Americana Restaurant on Regatta Drive, Rooster Boy is an al fresco dining experience. Don’t know of this is due to the pandemic, but I didn’t see any seating area other that the enclosed, heated patio. It was a cool and breezy day we were there, but heaters made the patio quite comfortable and cozy.
Love dining experiences that are not chain operations and have the “feel” of not being in Las Vegas. If you do also, Rooster Boy is such a place.
Also, do not know if due to the pandemic, but all food was served in disposable “dishes” and flat ware was also disposable. Very informal—almost a picnic feel. And if one asks for water, one receives a bottle for which there is a one dollar charge.
All that being said, Rooster Boy was a positive experience. The service was friendly and efficient. All tables were occupied when we were there, and our server was alert to our every need. I ordered the galette of the day, which the menu stated took a bit of time to prepare. My better half ordered a brisket hash with poached eggs and toast. We were both delighted with our selections. The crust on my galette was so flakey and delicious, and my husband worked to get every bit of his hash.
Since my order would take time, our waitress suggested a pastry while we waited. We declined this “breakfast appetizer” but opted to take two items for later. I chose a sticky bun and he a cinnamon roll. Rooster Boy features great pastries, and we noted many stopping by for carryout orders while we were eating.
The website is: roosterboycafe.com. The café is open Wednesday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Menu specials seem to change daily, and menu items are not listed on-line, nor are prices. There is a catering menu that is extensive. A specialty of the house seems to be homemade granola.
Again for a café feel, give Rooster Boy a try.

ROAD TRIP FOR COFFEE
Gotta get outa town. With various restrictions, that trapped at home feeling is getting to most of us. A few months ago, with another couple, we planned a “Road Trip” to near-by Boulder City. The weather was perfect—even one of our cooler early fall days. A brief drive (making sure to take Business Route 93 as we neared Boulder City) and we were there in the center of the Boulder City Historic District.
First on the agenda was breakfast at the famous Coffee Cup Café. Upon entering, we noted all staff and waiting customers were masked. What a nice feeling to be among people who care about others and themselves. Our food was delicious, and the service was beyond wonderful—never a coffee mug or water glass empty.
After browsing a few near-by shops, we headed for the historic Boulder Dam Hotel. Within the hotel is an art gallery featuring the works of Boulder City artists for sale. The items are truly of great quality. We purchased a variety of items at the shop for gifts and personal use.
Just down the hall from the gallery is a small museum that honors those who constructed the dam itself. Actual photos and artifacts are on display, but the most amazing feature is a film showing the construction of the dam and the installation of the electricity generators. There is no charge to visit the museum or view the film.
To conclude our “Road Trip,” we enjoyed iced teas on the front patio of the Boulder Dam Hotel. Again the service was courteous and efficient.
Everyone we encountered that day, at the Coffee Cup, in shops, art gallery, museum, and Boulder Dam Café wore the mandated masks and practiced social distancing. And it was so good to “get outta town.”

HASH HOUSE A GO GO IS A MUST GO
Gotta love living in Las Vegas and Summerlin in 2021—even with the COVID thing. Twenty-three years ago, when we moved
here, our Sun City area was a shopping and dining wasteland. There was no IKEA, Crate & Barrell, Starbucks, McDonald’s - much less Grape Vine, Ohlala, or Vintner Grill.
Fast forward. Many of my faves have made it to our area. And two, that used to require a bit of driving are now very close. I have written about Freed’s Bakery which used to require a trip to Henderson to get those fabulous cookies and cakes. It’s now in our Canyon Pointe Plaza (Charleston and Pavilion Center Drive). Recently in the same area as Freed’s, Hash House A Go Go Summerlin opened. Chicken and waffles just minutes away—it doesn’t get any better.
Four of us recently had brunch at Hash House Summerlin and were all duly impressed. Greeted by a staff member, opening the door for us, we felt very welcome. I had made the required reservation, and we noted masks, 25% occupancy, and tables limited to four patrons complied with the existing COVID limitations. My husband and I arrived first and asked for a table. We were seated promptly, but too near the door to be away from the cold each time the front door opened. We asked if we might have a different table in a warmer part of the restaurant. No sighs, or “OK, guess so’s.” The waitstaff couldn’t have been nicer in granting this request.
Other requests from the four of us with regard to separate checks, special requests due to dietary restrictions and the elimination of some of the standard garnishes were honored—again as if normal and not an inconvenience for our waitperson or the kitchen staff.
If you are familiar with Hash House, you know the serving sizes are beyond huge. As an aside, we often took out-of-town guests to the Hash House on Sahara Avenue—just for the shock and awe value of the serving sizes. Now this destination spot is so much nearer.
My husband and I went for the chicken and waffles (requesting a to-go box up front). A chicken and waffles serving consists of four good sized waffles, each with a bacon strip inside and two very large breaded chicken breast halves. Our fellow diners had special requests and were totally pleased with their selections. The service was flawless.
Presently the Summerlin location is open seven days a week for breakfast, brunch, lunch from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner hours, at this time, are Friday and Saturday only from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The complete menu does not appear to be posted on the website: hashhouseagogo.com. Nor are prices listed. However, each massive chicken and waffles entrée is $19.99 with more conventional choices much less.
Must mention the drinks menu we scanned while waiting to order. I think the ultimate Bloody Mary that was listed had something from every food group. That offering is also about $20.00. Other Bloody Mary selections were far less. Mimosas and special coffees had options that boggle this old gal’s mind. But what fun.
Hash House Summerlin is for us a special occasion place. Suggest you check it out. And if you want to amaze out-of-town guests by going to a place near-by, Hash House might do it.
And before you leave the area, just across the parking lot is “our Freed’s.” So stop in and get a piece of cake or some cookies.

JUST IN TIME FOR "SWEET SEASON"
Just in time for the “sweet season”—that time of year that we treat ourselves to tasty bits and feel a bit less guilt, Burgundy French Bakery-Café-Bistro has opened in near-by Village Square. Village Square is the commercial area on the northwest corner of Fort Apache and Sahara.
Open only for breakfast and lunch, this new addition to the neighborhood is, for us, a real find. Also note that Burgundy is closed Mondays. Check out the menu at: burgundybakery.com. A real plus, in my opinion is that the menu includes the prices. No check surprises. Also on the website are the hours of operation, location details and contact information.
Burgundy has a warm café feel. Though we planned to carry-out during our first visit, we noticed several dining-in and following (at the time of this writing) the 25% occupancy mandate. The décor is pleasant, however overshadowing the decor is the amazing display of pastries and sandwich offerings.
Not having ever met a croissant I didn’t like, I chose two—almond and chocolate. The size of the croissants was well worth the price. And both were truly delicious. My better half decided on a ham and cheese breakfast sandwich and was very pleased with his choice. Now we can’t wait to return and dine-in. On the way out, we picked up a freshly baked baguette. It, too, did not disappoint.
If you find yourself in the area of Village Square and feel, “Hey, I deserve a treat.” Check out Burgundy.

SUNNY SIDE UP WILL TURN YOUR FROWN UPSIDE DOWN
Finally made it to Sunny Side Up, the breakfast and lunch restaurant that debuted some time ago in Boca Park. We had heard from several sources that it was really good. My sources were right on. The place is a find.
Viewing the menu on-line, we noticed so many offerings. But once seated at our table in Sunny Side Up, we were presented with an even more extensive menu. If you can’t find something you like offered, then you must not like breakfast. It seems the menu covers all the bases.
Upon entering the neat and tastefully decorated restaurant, we were promptly shown to our table, and immediately offered drinks. Of course, all staff and customers not actually dining at a table wore face masks. My better half ordered corned beef hash, and I requested the Southern Benedict. Both dishes were beautifully presented. The corned beef hash was made with real cubes of corned beef combined with potatoes, onions and bell peppers—topped with two poached eggs. My Benedict was English muffin topped with sausage patties, poached eggs and, my very favorite, sausage gravy. In addition, my Benedict was accompanied by an ample helping of breakfast potatoes. We both proclaimed our meals truly delicious.
If the atmosphere and delicious food were not enough, the service was about as perfect as it gets. Water glasses and coffee cups were never allowed to be near empty. (One thing that really impressed was after we had paid our check and only coffee cups remained, we were still offered refills of coffee. It seemed the staff wanted us to stay and to enjoy Sunny Side Up a bit longer. Hate it once the check is paid and restaurant staff hover to clear the table ASAP.)
Sunny Side Up is located just south of the vacant space next to Cheesecake Factory in Boca Park. The street address as listed on the website is 750 South Rampart Boulevard, Suite 15. (Please note the restaurant does not face Rampart Boulevard, but the drive within Boca Park.) Service is available for dining in, curb-side pick-up and delivery. The telephone number is (775) 777-3737. Sunny Side Up is open every day from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. And the website is www.sunnysideuprestaurant.com.

EATING YOUR VEGGIES BECOMES A REAL EYE-OPENER
Vegan fare is basically tasteless and all tofu, right? Wrong! Recently had to change a long-held perception about vegan food. A while back, Flower Child offered some surprises, but a trip to VeggiEAT located in the Trails Center shopping center was a real eye-opener—vegan that was truly tasty.
Prompted by a 20% off coupon we received in the mail, we thought, why not give it a try. What a pleasant surprise. Billed as an “Asian Fusion Eatery,” VeggiEAT is just that. So if you don’t like Chinese, Japanese, or a bit of Thai, read no further. But if you are ready to try something new, head to VeggiEAT. Tucked away in the Trails Center corner that shares a patio with The Bar, VeggiEAT occupies the space vacated by Natalie Young’s EAT. The décor is neat and clean and the staff most welcoming.
The menu ranges from Japanese and Chinese to a bit of Thai and is extensive. While we were waiting for our carry-out order to be prepared, we were offered water and tea. As we were sipping our tea, a lady who appeared to be the manager came to our table and said that if we didn’t see a combination on the menu that was to our liking, the staff would gladly prepare a combination to suit. Didn’t see lamb curry on the menu, but I plan to request it next visit.
We ordered three dishes—Mongolian beef, chicken curry, and Singapore noodles. For dessert we ordered a piece of German chocolate cake to share. The Mongolian beef was our favorite. The chicken curry was nice and spicy. Least favorite was Singapore noodles, but just because we were so impressed with the spiced flavors of the beef and chicken. The chocolate cake was a bit messy as we tried to divide it. Think we should have refrigerated it until we were ready to eat it.
This is not VeggiEAT’s first valley location, but its third. The other two are in Henderson and on South Grand Canyon Drive. At present there are dine in, carryout, and delivery options. We noticed many carry outs while we waited for our food to be prepared.
The prices are in line with other local eateries. And daily lunch specials are listed on-line as $8.88—a most auspicious number in Asian culture. The on-line menu doesn’t begin to list all that VeggiEAT has to offer, nor does the extensive menu available at the eatery. Remember the lady said they would try to accommodate any request.
Hours of operation are listed as 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The actual address is 1910 Village Center Circle. Website and telephone number are: www.veggieatexpress.com and 702.780.5659.
Visit VeggiEAT and give vegan a try, it might surprise you.

TRIX AREN'T JUST FOR KIDS AT
CEREAL KILLERZ
Do you believe “Trix are for kids” is the worst kind of ageism? Do you have the same affinity for cereal as Seinfeld? Well, have I found a place for you--Cereal Killerz new location in Centennial Hills. The first Cereal Killerz location is at the Galleria at Sunset in Henderson.
Must admit, the cute name was first what caught my attention. Then checked the menu on-line and was truly intrigued. Shakes, sundaes, waffles and tacos featuring cereal, really? Of course, you can get a bowl of cereal and milk if you are a purist. Over 100 cereals from which to choose.
I opted for a S’mores shake, while my better half ordered a Peanut Butter Lover’s sundae. Neither of us were disappointed. While ordering my shake, I had all kinds of options—chocolate or vanilla ice cream, milk choices (non-fat, 2%, or whole), regular or chocolate whipped cream. My peanut butter lover had options for his sundae—and did he want to top it with Reese’s Pieces? Of course.
Who knew cereal presented creatively could be so truly delicious. We were both pleased with our selections which were desserts for breakfast. And what a great place to take visiting grandchildren for a special treat.
Décor is neat and cereals are featured everywhere. While our orders were being assembled, we spent the time looking at a wall that must contain the box front of every kind of cereal known in the US. Never dreamed there were so many.
At present Cereal Killerz does not have an eat-in option—just carry-out. Also no cash is accepted, a nod to Covid-19 precautions.
This is Cereal Killerz second valley location. It is located at 7540 Oso Blanca Road in the Oso Blanca Pavilions retail area accessed from the intersection of Durango Boulevard and Oso Blanca Road—just north of the US 95 and Durango interchange. As I write this, the Centennial Hills location doesn’t appear to have a dedicated website, but a Google search for the store does provide some menu options, and hours of operation which seem a bit different from the Galleria location. However, the website for the Henderson location provides an idea of the many menu options Hours for the Centennial Hills Cereal Killerz are: Sunday through Thursday 10 A.M. to 8 P.M, Friday 10 A.M. to 9 P.M. and Saturday from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M.
So if you are cuckoo for Coco Puffs, give Cereal Killerz at Centennial Hills a try.

A Delicious Meal is Just on
The Edge of Town
Prompted by a fellow Link Board member, we had breakfast at The Edge of Town--a 24 hours dining and gaming place--tucked away in the northeast corner of the junction of the 215 and Cheyenne Boulevard. Must say, our in-house dining experience was just prior to the middle March shut-down for in-house dining. For many of you readers, the fact that The Edge of Town is a great place for any meal—breakfast, lunch, or dinner—is old news. And after our visit, I am wondering what took us so long to visit.
I had checked on-line and knew the breakfast menu offered biscuits and gravy. Hey, I am an old country girl and love the stuff. That was my choice, while my better half opted for a more conventional breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes and toast. Our coffee orders were one regular and one decaf. Our waitperson, who was fantastic by the way, said she didn’t have any decaf ready, but would make a pot.
(As an aside, we had just previously gone to an establishment and asked for decaf and received a “No” with nary an offer to brew some. We had been to this establishment many times and always had decaf. The fact that the lady serving us at The Edge of Town offered to make a pot of decaf truly reflected on the place’s willingness to please a customer.)
Our breakfasts were truly delicious—with the biscuits light and fluffy and the gravy “just like Grandma used to make.” My husband said his breakfast was truly tasty. Though not intrusive, our waitperson made sure our coffee cups never neared empty.
My tipster said he recommends the Cobb salad and the pot roast. He added he has never had a bad meal at The Edge of Town. I asked another friend/resident if she had ever been to The Edge of Town. A frequent diner there, she, too, echoed the same “never a bad meal there.”
Checked the Edge of Town’s website and note they now offer pick-up, delivery and in-house dining. The website is: edgeoftownlasvegas.com. As restrictions change daily, I would suggest visiting the website to determine what dining options are offered when you consider a meal at or from The Edge of Town.
Can’t wait to try the pot roast or the Cobb salad. And you can bet, The Edge of Town is now high on our list of regular spots.

ADA'S SCOOPS UP GREAT FLAVORS AT TIVOLI VILLAGE
Finally, we made it to the much-acclaimed Ada’s at Tivoli Village. It was a mid-afternoon on a Saturday, and most of the indoor tables were full. We had looked at the full lunch and dinner menus online. Meal offerings on the weekend as listed on the website are not clear cut as we learned from our waitperson. However, she said if we truly wanted a dinner item a bit ahead of time, the kitchen could accommodate. Nice.
After given our choice of the remaining indoor tables, we were seated promptly. Lots of tables available outdoors but only a few hardy souls were opting for the chilly exterior; had to be tourists from colder climes. There is a large outdoor seating area — great for seeing and being seen. We would opt for al fresco on a warmer day.
A member of the wait staff and water were at our table soon after we were seated. We ordered bread and olives for starters. The bread was truly half a loaf along with a serving of olives with almonds and hazelnuts. It was a great beginning. Our waitperson watched carefully to time the arrival of our entrees after we were finished with our antipasti. Hate it when mid-starter or still eating salad and the entrée appears. This attention to timing was truly so nice.
We both enjoyed our entrees. My better half chose the Gemelli, while I had rigatoni.
There is a good wine selection and my pour was generous. It paired well with my entrée, just as the waitperson said it would.
At the end of the meal, I had heard Ada’s was known for ice cream. Three flavors were offered — vanilla, chocolate and salted caramel. We both decided to try the salted caramel. It was delicious. We both wanted coffee with our desserts and were a bit disappointed that decaf was not available.
Loved the pottery serving dishes and the clean, neat décor. The kitchen is open and bustling. Prices were in line with comparable places in our area. As always, you can check out the prices along with the location and hours of operation at www.adaslv.com.
Ada’s is a great addition to the eateries available at Tivoli. And the ice cream is truly tasty.

TRATTORIA REGGIANO SERVES UP SPECIAL
ALONGSIDE TASTY FARE
For quite some time we have passed by Trattoria Reggiano’s Downtown Summerlin location opting for other places to eat. A gift card generously given to us by a fellow Sun City resident prompted us to give the place a try. What a find! And so nearby.
There are two Trattoria Reggiano locations in Las Vegas, one at The Venetian and the other in our neighborhood. The Downtown Summerlin location gets high marks for my four criteria for a dining spot — service, food, décor and general atmosphere. The table arrangement is such that space between offers a good deal of privacy for a party. The bar area is also nicely arranged. The bar was quite busy the weekday evening we were there.
We did not have a reservation, but we were early enough to score a great table. However, as the evening wore on, both the restaurant and bar area became quite busy. Next time we will make a reservation. And you can be sure there will be a next time.
After ordering drinks, delicious garlic rolls and a small antipasto plate were soon at our table. The waiter was my kind of guy — attentive but not aiming to be “my best friend.” Our appetizer of fried calamari was good, but the marinara sauce that accompanied it was amazing. My better half went for spaghetti and meatballs and I, spaghetti carbonara. We both were very pleased with our selections. The servings are generous. At our house, we “do” leftovers, so both of us came home with dinner for the next evening. We passed on dessert as we had had quite enough. We did have a coffee and a cappuccino. Both were nicely presented.
Our total bill sans coupon but with tax just reached five $$$$$. So, for us, this is definitely a special occasion dining spot, not something we will do often. I have seen a $20 coupon for Trattoria Reggiano in the free alternative paper. Check to see if it can be used at the Downtown Summerlin location.
This eatery has been awarded a “Best of Las Vegas” honor for “Best Italian Restaurant — again, this might be the Strip location. However, I feel the Downtown Summerlin location, if not now, should be easily included.
I did notice the website menu listings, www.trattoria-geggiano.com/summerlin, did not include prices. I always like when prices are listed online. Open Table reservations are available. Trattoria Reggiano offers a Saturday and Sunday brunch. This restaurant is located among the cluster of Downtown Summerlin restaurants that includes Grape Vine.
As always, I invite suggestions from Sun City Summerlin residents who have had positive experiences at nearby eateries.

FINALLY, A FREEDS IN SUMMERLIN
Finally, our very own Freeds. Several years ago, after making the acquaintance of Paul Fried, flutist, we had to check out Freeds Bakery in Henderson. What a find, but so far away.
Now for a bit of background.
Paul’s father, Milton Fried, began Freeds Bakery in the Las Vegas Valley 60 years ago this year. Paul became a world-renowned flutist who is a most welcome and frequent performer at our Sun City Classical Music Club. Check out Paul’s creds at: paulfriedflutist.com. The difference in the spelling of the family name and the bakery name came about because Milton didn’t think a bakery name should be “fried” as the name is actually spelled, though pronounced with a long e. Thus, Freeds.
After the visit years ago to the, then, only Freeds location, I wondered if there would ever be a Freeds in Summerlin. A short while ago a Freeds opened in Centennial Hills. And, finally this summer, our Freeds opened ever so near our Sun City. The address is 10870 W. Charleston Blvd., #110, in the Shoppes at Canyon Pointe — just south of Costco. It does take a bit of searching within the businesses to get to Freeds, but once found you will not forget the location. Facing Jimmy John’s, Freeds is located to the left. If you are familiar with Distill Bar, Freeds’ front door faces Distill across a big parking lot.
On our first trip we opted for cookies, which one buys by the pound. That is really great as we mixed and matched those that were most tempting. The staff is truly so patient as we, like others we noticed, pointed and chose “one of those, three of that kind …” you get the idea. On our next visit, my better half and I each got a piece of cake. Both of us are chocoholics. He chose the Chocolate Fudge Blackout Cake, while I selected Parisian Chocolate Cake. We had found our favorites.
The shop takes special orders, but requires a 72-hour advance notice for such. A dear friend had Freeds’ apple pie and said it was truly wonderful. Pies seem to require the advance notice, but cake, cookies, cupcakes and even cookie/ice cream sandwiches always seem to be available. And if you just can’t wait to taste your purchase, there are a few stools at a counter and a nearby table that allow you to enjoy your purchase with fresh coffee right then and there.
Freeds has a loyalty program that is tied to your phone number. You get texts with special offers and surprises. Be sure to enroll when you first visit.
For hours of operation, contact information and descriptions of delicious offerings, the website is: freedsbakery.com. To get information about the Summerlin Freeds, click on “New Location in Summerlin.”
Finally, a Freeds for us Summerlin Sun Citians.

LE BELLE TERRE IS FRENCH FOR 'DELICIOUS'
Recently an appointment caused us to be on West Sahara Avenue near La Belle Terre Bakery. In past years, we visited this bakery/restaurant and enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Several months ago, we attempted to visit and found it closed. Thinking it was a victim to Las Vegas’ ever-changing eatery scene, we were saddened at its going. But, wait, driving by recently we noticed it had suddenly returned. Whew! It has just been closed for remodeling.
We were thrilled to find this little gem is now back better than ever.
La Belle Terre is always busy when we have visited. And two recent times there were no exception. Seems this bakery/café has a large and loyal following.
Hours of operation are daily, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for bakery items. Breakfast and lunch are served, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We have been tempted to try lunch offerings, but can’t seem to get past breakfast. If you are a French toast lover as we are, we can highly recommend the traditional French toast. My better half was truly pleased with the breakfast sandwich he ordered on our first return visit. He said the bread was outstanding, and the breakfast potatoes and small salad that came with made this menu item a filling meal.
The surroundings are pleasing and neat — truly café décor. There is a small area of patio seating, which, on pleasant days, seems to be full of diners enjoying pastries, various menu items and coffee. Customers place their orders and pay for them up front. If not carrying out, you get a number to place on your table so the wait staff can deliver your order. On our visit, we opted for indoor seating that is available in the main bakery area or a small adjacent dining area. Our experience has been that the service is prompt and friendly, with hot items served immediately.
There are difficult choices at La Belle Terre. As one walks to the registers to place an order, it is necessary to pass a display case of truly beautiful pastries. Many opt for a sweet and coffee instead of the cooked-to-order items. Others who dine in choose to take home eye-catching pastries to be enjoyed later.
La Belle Terre is located at 8390 W. Sahara Ave. (on the north side of Sahara between the major streets of Cimarron Road and Durango Drive — the commercial area containing Paymon’s Café and Nothing Bundt Cakes).
I always like hearing of additional places to visit, and two days after our recent visit to La Belle Terre, Sharon Bishop, our Link advertising coordinator, told me she had just discovered the greatest place. She was talking about the very same La Belle Terre! She had stopped in for one of those beautiful pastries and a cup of coffee.

Have you ever had one of those dining experiences that was perfect in every respect? We recently experienced two such at Marche Bacchus, located in nearby Desert Shores. The surroundings were wonderful — patio seating by Lake Jacqueline with perfect weather. The service was prompt but not intrusive; the food truly delicious, and the live music was the icing on the cake.
Not long ago we learned that on Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., there is a wonderful guitarist who performs at Marche Bacchus. We first heard him play for a private birthday party and enjoyed his music. Turns out this talented fellow is one of our Sun City Summerlin’s own — Dirk Kleutgens, our Starbright Theatre’s sound technician. Check out Dirk’s website, www.dirkk.com. He is an amazing talent.
During our time in Las Vegas, we have watched Marche Bacchus evolve from a small wine shop with a few waterside tables into a destination/special occasion restaurant that is not to be missed.
The food has never disappointed us — the cheese and charcuterie boards, French onion soup, salads, entrees, desserts (the Limoncello dessert is truly delicious) and wine selections are all winners. We have even enjoyed escargot. I know, not everyone’s thing.
Many like to select a bottle of wine from the vast selection within the shop. It appears the corkage fee is $10 per bottle, but wine is also available by the glass for prices that are on a par with comparable establishments. Recently, Marche Bacchus added spirits to its wine and beer offerings.
Hours of operation, menus, prices, the OpenTable reservation site and directions to Marche Bacchus can all be found at www.marchebacchus.com. As this is a very popular place, I would suggest making a reservation. If you are going specifically to enjoy Dirk’s music, request a table that will afford a good location for watching and listening, and enjoy this nearby treasure.
