SCS  PATROL FLAG RETIREMENT CEREMONY
HELD ON MAY 9, 2026

The event was held at Desert Vista picnic grounds. It was a perfect weather day with no wind, sunny and temps. in the 80-90s. There was shade for seating. Around 50 residents showed up.

The morning started around 10 AM with problems with both grills. The grill to be used for the flag burning had the grate very low so we couldn’t get the briquettes in. Then both covers became locked. SCS maintenance was called for help around 10:15 AM. One worker showed up and didn’t know how to fix it. And he didn’t want to listen to me or Frank’s advice. He finally called for more help and two more maintenance workers arrived then a third. They finally took the covers apart and opened one side. We started the fire around 11 AM some twenty minutes late. It worked out as the Scouts were late getting their act together.

The grill being used for the hotdogs didn’t work either. After getting maintenance to help they finally got another grill that worked.

Around twelve scouts from troop 912 and 770 began the program around 11:15 AM. Patrol Asst. Chief Dee O’Dowd welcomed everyone and introduced Eagle Scout Mason Brewer from Troop 912. Scout leader David Kubajah from Troop 770 kept everything moving.

Around 11:45 AM everyone was served hotdogs, pop and water by our Patrol Social Committee. The Patrol members provided some goodies. The goodies table was in the shade. The hotdog area was in the sun. During this time flags were put into the very hot fire.  Around 12:30 PM the Scouts needed to pack up and leave after enjoying hotdogs. Jerry O’Dowd provided the speakers and music.

After all was said and done we ended up with ten boxes and a large garbage bag of flags. Richard placed them in the Patrol shed for now. Troop members donated flags and some residents brought some also. So, any idea what to do with the leftover flags?? We probably can’t leave them in the shed.

The Troop leader again thanks us for inviting them and hope to be invited back again. They did a great job with the program.

Gail from the Link took group photos of Patrol members in uniform and then with the Scouts. SCS Executive Director Mitzi Mills attended and thanked us for our work. She also thanked the Scouts.

If you ever have US flags needing to be retired, please drop them off at the three SCS Information Centers, Patrol headquarters south end of Desert Vista parking lot or flag down a patrol member in the patrol car.
