Sun City’s Building Maintenance staff was busy decking out Sun City’s common area buildings in holiday lights on Tuesday morning, November 19. The outside lights start appearing around the community this time of year and remain up through January 6. All community entrances, social halls and fitness centers, along with the clubhouse at Highland Falls are illuminated in colorful displays for the season.
BOD WISHES BARBARA HOLDEN FAREWELL
The November 12 Board of Directors meeting at Desert Vista marked the last assembly for Sun City Summerlin Board member Barbara Holden, who served as one of this year’s assistant treasurers and the BOD liaison to the Link Advisory Committee. According to SCSCAI Board President Leo Crawford, Barbara’s resignation would become effective at the end of the evening’s meeting.
Following the motion to accept the night's agenda, the meeting continued with the announcement of Barbara’s resignation and an address by Barbara to the residents in attendance.
“I had lived here less than 6 months and I was told I would never get elected,” Barbara said reading from a prepared speech explaining how she had recently found her paperwork from when she filed for her seat three years ago.
“A stubborn Iowa farm girl, I didn’t listen. My response was I would work hard with fresh ideas. I would be a good listener and move our community forward to try and make a difference.”
And a difference she has made, from her work with the Neighborhood Preparedness Team, to growing Sun City’s Neighborhood Watch groups to the ongoing Smoke Alarm Replacement Program.
One by one, following her address, BOD members Jim Akers, Dick Clark, Bruce Alitt, Gerry Sokolski, Dave Putney and Ken Resnik paid their respects through fond memories and well-wishes for the future.
Last but not least, SCSCAI Executive Director Mitzi Mills recalled the time she first met Barbara.”
“You were moving so fast that day and you have not quit moving since,” Mitzi said.
“In the HOA industry, we have experts not only in Association management and growing communities but also in establishing working board members. Not too long ago many of these well-respected experts got together to identify the Top 10 traits of a good HOA board member. In my opinion, the experts could put a picture of Barbara Holden in their report as an example of a board member who has served her HOA well.”
From the audience, and sitting in the front row, longtime resident and former Sun City Board member Tom Brennan said, “This is the first time I’ve ever seen this kind of recognition given to a Board member who has resigned. And she deserves it.”
From your friends and neighbors in Sun City, “Thank you and good luck, Barbara.”

A SALUTE TO SUN CITY'S VETERANS
WWII Tribute Kicks Off Residents' Forum Program
Sun City’s Residents’ Forum honored the community’s veterans during its annual Salute to Vets event on November 13 at Desert Vista. Volunteer organizer for the military-themed event, Jay Sesto, invited the Centennial High School Color Guard to get the evening started, followed by Mandy Breen, who sang a poignant rendition of America’s “National Anthem.”
Every year, the Residents’ Forum honors Sun City’s veterans with a program hosted by Las Vegas City Councilman Stavros Anthony who presents veterans in attendance with a certificate of gratitude for their service. This year, the Forum was open to doing things a little differently, and the Link Magazine was happy to be able to suggest an idea that covered several fronts:
Every year, the Residents’ Forum honors Sun City’s veterans with a program hosted by Las Vegas City Councilman Stavros Anthony who presents veterans in attendance with a certificate of gratitude for their service. This year, the Forum was open to doing things a little differently, and the Link Magazine was happy to be able to suggest an idea that covered several fronts:
- Sun City could join the rest of the world in honoring the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion.
- Residents could take a moment to pay homage to their neighbors who served in World War II. These veterans, between the ages of 94 to 100 years old, would be the special guests of the evening. They would be honored for their service and thanked for sharing their stories with the Link Magazine over the last two years. The stories of 16 WWII veterans were part of a special tribute issue published by the Link and included in the November issue of the magazine.
- All guests would be treated to a special talk by resident Navy veteran Bruce Adams.
- Every Sun City veteran would be honored for their service.
- Veterans and guests would be treated to apple pie and ice cream to enjoy with their neighbors and new friends.
