Sun City residents honored the winners of the 2018 Holiday Lights Contest during the Residents’ Forum on December 12 at Desert Vista. More than 225 residents packed the ballroom for the group’s annual holiday party that included a food drive for Catholic Charities, a toy drive for the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program, festive desserts and entertainment by Melanie Spector.
Dance Company: North Pole or Bust
On December 12, the Sun City Dance Company performed a dress rehearsal in full costume of its “North Pole Follies.” The Club opened the performance to the public because the show, scheduled for December 16 at the Starbright Theatre, sold out (they couldn’t even find a seat for me)!
The show featured the entire company in beautiful holiday costumes and included a special performance by The Spotlight Kids – children ages 9 to 15 who study tap at a local studio in Summerlin.
I’ve been photographing the Dance Company for 12 years and look forward to the club's performances. Although I am not a professional reviewer, I enjoyed “A Hip Hop Carol” by the Vegas Vagabonds and “Christmas in Kilarney” by the Sizzlin’ Steppers Drill Team because they were innovative and different from what I have seen in the past. I cannot wait for the Club’s biannual show that will be coming in May! Stay tuned for more information.

Early Morning Ice Makes for a Slippery Sidewalk
Thank you to Sun City resident Dave Brough, who reminds his fellow neighbors to be careful of icy sidewalks now and during the coming months. When pre-dawn sprinklers do their thing, it’s often an icy surface that results just in time for early morning walkers. If you water your grass, please be mindful of the run-off, and if you walk, be careful when you see water on the sidewalks and streets. A little extra attention can help prevent a nasty slip and fall.
Pickleball Club Serves Up Lots of Toys for U.S. Marines
On Saturday and Sunday, December 8-9, the Pickleball Club held a Toys for Tots charity tournament in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps at Desert Vista. This is the third year of the Club’s existence and it has grown from 34 members to 90 members.
This year, 158 players from all over the country and Canada participated in the Toys for Tots tournament, completing 350 games.
According to Pickleball Club President Augie Costanzo, The Canadian players were the first to sign up. When asked by Augie if they were here for a conference or other special event, the players replied, “We’re here to play Pickleball and you’re the special event!”
Augie offered his volunteers a huge thank you, saying the tournament’s success rests on their great efforts, along with their dedication and organization.
“We could not do what we do without the volunteers,” he said. “And now, we have been considered one of the best Pickleball Clubs in the area, with a venue to match. In 2019, we have been asked to host the Pickleball event for the Nevada Senior Games.”
As of December 13, Augie said the Club has collected more than $6,000 and over 200 toys for the Marines’ Toys for Tots drive.

Desert Vista Welcomes Clubs' Festivities
It’s that time of the year and many of our 81 chartered clubs and community organizations are having holiday parties. Many of our groups are taking advantage of the ballroom at the Desert Vista Community Center. I was invited to three celebrations last week and I wanted to show readers how Sun City Summerlin celebrates the holidays.
The first party I attended was my Aquacize Club event on December 5. Eighty-seven people attended the holiday luncheon, and our president, Jill Robinson, told me the party was catered by the Sun City Food & Beverage Department. There were two entrees, other fixin’s, and pumpkin and apple pies. Members played Bingo, and winners received $10 gift certificates to The Summit or Tavern at the Falls restaurants. The Club collected toys and canned foods for the Salvation Army. One lucky member at each table went home with the poinsettia centerpiece. Everyone had a great time.
On Thursday evening, my wife and I went to the annual general business meeting of the Computer Club to select next year’s officers. After the election, there were 20 envelopes with $10 each that were raffled off, and then Kathy Kirby and her entertainment committee brought out the food and we had our party. Our president, Jeff Wilkinson, mentioned that we had about 85 members in attendance.
On Saturday morning, December 8, I observed the Krafty Kritters’ holiday party that began about 10:30 a.m. Members enjoyed a visit from Santa (played by Frank Nakahama) and posed for photos with the jolly celebrity. Thank you announcements were made to the year’s officers and each was given a poinsettia as a gift. Next up, Sun City resident Audrey Smith entertained the group with her one-woman show featuring singing, dancing and a little piano. After the entertainment, drawing were held and all the prizes were given out.
From what I experienced, all the members had an enjoyable time, and thanks go out to Marilyn Pittman, president of Krafty Kritters, and the multi-talented Audrey Smith, for inviting me.

Mountain Shadows Golf Cart Parking Project Complete
SCSCAI's Building Maintenance and Landscape departments worked successfully with an outside contractor to complete a recent project that added 10 golf cart parking spaces to the west-side entrance of the Mountain Shadows Community Center. Residents who drive their golf carts to Mountain Shadows may now take advantage of the spaces located next to the building's kitchen entrance. The parking lot is also conveniently located a few steps away from the automatic doors closest to the Membership Services office.
