Sun City was honored twice this year in the annual 2018 Best Of Las Vegas Awards by readers of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Highland Falls Golf Course took home its fourth Gold Award in four years for first place in the Things to Do category. According to results, Highland Falls is a “Championship-caliber course that golfers of all skill levels can enjoy without having to break the bank to play. It offers top-notch customer service and great year-round playing conditions.”
“A huge thank you to Brian Bagwell, SCSCAI Director of Golf Course Maintenance, Roger Knight and their Golf Course Maintenance staff as this award wouldn’t be possible without their hard work, keeping the golf course in great condition throughout the year," said Donny Long, SCSCAI Director of Golf. "This award also shows how proud I am of my staff for their wonderful customer service offered to our residents and their guest."
The sentiment was echoed by GCM Director Brian Bagwell, who also had great things to say about his crew. “We are very excited and honored to be voted Best of Las Vegas again this year at Highland Falls! I am very proud of our dedicated staff that works so diligently to keep the course in excellent shape!”
Highland Falls beat out nearly 40 public course in the valley to retain its Best Of title, which represents a true people’s choice award.
Sun City took home a second award in the highly regarded readers’ poll as it was honored with a Silver Award for Best Senior Community in the Real Estate, Home & Garden category.
Congratulations, Sun City Summerlin!

And the Winner of the Chili Challenge Is ... Paul LeBaron

On Wednesday, October 10, the third annual “Chili Challenge” took place in the Desert Vista Ballroom. The Chili Challenge is sponsored by the Residents’ Forum. The members of the Residents Forum committee that presented the event are Julie Zerbel, Karl and Julie Wiedemann, Linda Genovese, Ceci Schreiber, Barbara Borriello, Mari Pupanek, Tammy Vaaler and Bob Altomondo.
This year there were 21 contestants for the best chili. Clubs, Sun City administrative departments, individual residents and even one SCSCAI Board Member (Barbara Holden) were the participants. I was told there were more than 300 residents at this function, sampling the different chilis, which included vegetarian, chicken, pork, beef and even a recipe based on rib-eye steak! This year there was even a cash bar, which sold beer, soda and bottles of water.
Many people were talking during the evening, however, most people were busy eating and enjoying the decorations at each table. There chilis recipes represented from Iowa, Wisconsin, Texas and many other parts of the country.
As the residents moved around from one chili station to the next, they could drop their entry ticket in a bowl to vote for the chili of their choice. The winning chili was from Sun City’s Membership Services Department created by Director Paul Le Baron, who accepted the award for his “Super Bowl Super Chili.” The recipe included tri-tip steak, ground beef and dark beer. He also served up some homemade cornbread. You can view the traveling chili champs trophy at the Membership Services Office at the Mountain Shadows Community Center.
This was the third year of the Chili Challenge. And, being from New York, three years ago was the first time my wife and I ever had chili. We’ve been to all three and cannot wait until next year.

Snap Dragon Season: Landscape Department Gets Sun City Ready for Winter
Louis Darling, SCSCAI’s Director of Landscape, reported that the color beds in Sun City are being prepared for their winter/spring plantings.
“The new plants will be delivered today and will begin to be planted as soon as the guys can get them in.”
As for what plants Louis has selected to brighten up Sun City for the upcoming months?
“I always use snap dragons,” he said. “They do very well here and the rabbits tend to leave them alone. They will bloom during the winter and then really get popping in the spring. The snap dragons will last until we change out to the summer color again.”
