Volunteers Offer Comfort Following Mass Shooting
Georgia and Don Rutkowski at Ronald McDonald House Charities in Las Vegas. The two were among the volunteers helping to make lunches for families of shooting victims at Sunrise and Valley hospitals.
Sun City residents Georgia and Don Rutkowski wasted no time jumping into the line to help Ronald McDonald House volunteers prepare 300 lunches for families of victims, following the October 1 mass shooting at the Route 91 Country Music Harvest Festival on the Las Vegas Strip. A longtime volunteer at RMH, Georgia said her team usually prepares 148 bagged lunches a week for families supporting medical fragile children, but when the need at University Medical Center and Sunrise Hospital increased last week, Georgia, Don and others stepped into action. “It just feels good to be able to help people,” said Georgia following several days of working at RMH last week. In addition to preparing the sack lunches, RMH volunteers have been busy delivering food, sorting donations and providing vital resources to people affected by the tragedy.

On Saturday, October 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in our Desert Vista Ballroom and the adjoining
vestibules, resident crafters were busy selling and showing off their creations to a steady stream of shoppers. Tables and displays of various arts and crafts kept visitors busy buying and asking questions of artists like our own Adrian Cole, who was selling his beautiful photos of the Southwest and Alaska. You could purchase hand-painted portraits by Sharon Evans, antique ships and airplanes by John Butterfield, gorgeous ceramics by Yaffa Cary, beautifully embroidered towels and dolls by members of the Just Sew Club, as well as towels and pot holders by Lynn and Lonnie Stadheim.
Literally, the place was packed and many visitors could be seen leaving the event with smiles on their faces with crafts and full bags in their hands.

Residents Invited to Air Opinions at Evening Meeting: SAVE THE DATE, Tuesday, October 17
At a recent Coffee with the Board, residents were surveyed about scheduling an evening session similar to the monthly morning meeting. The later time was suggested as a way to accommodate Sun City residents who work, or may have other daytime commitments that prevent them from attending the 10:30 a.m. Coffee With the Board. When residents in the audience were asked if they would support an evening session, most of them indicated that they would be interested in doing so.
SCSCAI Directors Barbara Holden and Ellen Bachman ran with the response and scheduled the evening meeting, which they are calling Treats an Talk With SCSCAI Directors Barbara Holden and Ellen Bachman. The event will take place at The Summit on Tuesday, October 17, at 5:30 p.m. The meeting is a forum for everyone who lives here.
In the same manner as Coffee with the Board, there will be no specific meeting agenda and no decisions can be made during the event. Residents are encouraged to talk about anything that concerns them with the assurance that directors Holden and Bachman are anxious to hear from them.
For more information, contact Barbara Holden at 319-310-577 or [email protected]; or Ellen Bachman at 702-966-1453 or [email protected]
