Cruising The Strip During a Pandemic
As the casinos on the Strip begin to open next week, I thought now would be the time to share some photos taken over the past couple of weeks by residents Judith and Dennis Filangeri and myself. We took separate trips to witness the eerie emptiness of the Strip, but both came away with the similar observations and feelings.
Judith said, " We went down to the Strip one Sunday when traffic out to the airport is usually solid. This is what we got." She is referring to the photos below showing the lack of cars and people. She mentioned that it reminded her of the old movie "On The Beach" which shows scenes of major cities, devoid of people.
Curiosity got the best of me last Saturday. I heard the casinos would be opening soon and thought this might be a once in a lifetime opportunity to bicycle down the Strip. It was worth every second of getting up at 4 a.m. to venture down there and begin our bike ride at 5:15 a.m. I've run the Strip in the past during the Rock n Roll Half Marathon, but this was totally different. During the runs, the sidewalks were crowded with bystanders cheering us on with loud music blasting to help keep our energy up for that next mile. Runners would have to gently jostle for a spot while passing other runners in the street. Last Saturday, during the bike ride, it was silent. I could hear bird chirping, fountain waters flowing, and the clinking sound from my bike changing gears. I could smell the plants and flowers. It smelled wonderful. Not the usual smell while strolling down Las Vegas Blvd. We were able to bicycle back and forth across all the lanes without a vehicle in sight.
We hope you enjoy our photos. As our city and community begin to re-open, please be safe, stay healthy, and find fun where you can. These are times we will be talking about for years to come.
